Life is full of change. One great thing happens, then you turn a corner and something bad happens. Seasons change in the weather the same as they do in our lives. But, the one thing that ALWAYS remains the same is our incredible God- regardless of whether or not we are in an "up time" or "down time".

Renee and I have been on a journey in ministry together for 11 1/2 years now. She is my partner. We have some news that we want to share with you next Thursday at Prime that we hope will be a blessing. It's hard to listen to the voice of God sometimes, especially when it's not comfortable. But, there is GREAT blessing in following the Lord's voice. He is our Great Shepherd and we will follow him with our lives!

Can't wait to tag-team with John next week as we share some important news, hope you'll be able to make it.

Prime Moves to Thursdays!

Wow...here we go. We have been praying about a move to Thursdays for a long time and have decided that the summer is the perfect time for the change. In other good news, we've decided to meet EVERY week throughout the summer and not just once a month. In other words, we heard you.

Now it's your turn. There is something that we at Prime cannot do, reach out to your friends. We need your help. You can bring someone with you on Thursday, June 17th for the kickoff of Summer Prime. We want this to be the best summer ever.

Welcome again to our new graduates. We would be honored for you to join us at Prime and throughout the summer with the great activities being planned. And, there are 2 Dynamic Sunday School classes being started just for you. So, stay together with your group (if you like) and join us on Sundays at 9:30am or 11:00am in the B-210 hallway (top of the B-building) starting June 20th! Also, make sure to join us on FB so you can keep up with the updates.

We sometimes see the Bible through the eyes of our culture. But, we need to see it in context of the day. The Bible is relevant for every culture and every day life, but don't you wonder sometimes how they were hearing the news that Jesus was sharing in the context of everyday life there in Israel?

We bridge from one situation to the next in our lives. Seasons come and go and situations can change on a dime! Come check out Prime in the next few weeks and let's explore some of the "AH HA" moments of the Old and New Testament. Hear it through the ears of the 1st century listener. Make sense of some of those rogue, Old testament sayings. See how the Bible continues to be the ultimate authority for life and godliness.

Magnificent

I love the U2's "Magnificent", but really- could Seth and the Prime band have covered that song any better? That was ridiculous. What a fun night. It's always interesting to look at the vastness of our Creator and then to sit back and comprehend that He really does care about the needs of my heart too. Stars, galaxies, moons, solar systems are no match for the heart of a human being created in the image of God, the Creator.

If you can remember one thing this week, remember that the vastness and magnificence of nature (created by God) should drive us to be a humble people. Greatness often times produces humility, and rightly so.

Remember, if you say- like Jeremiah, "I do not know how to speak; I am only a child," that God touched his mouth and put the words in them, then he said to go unafraid, He'll be with us and will rescue us. Gotten in to trouble lately for standing up for the cause of Christ? Maybe it hasn't been a priority. I hope you'll "stop, turn around" and then walk straight at the Savior. Let Him be your guiding light, your compass. Don't spend your life walking in circles. Be a World Changer, one person at a time. Then, bring them with you to a place where God can work in them (PRIME), and watch God work.

Where is your focus this week?

"We spend the majority of time in the temporal, but we'll spend the majority of time in the eternal". This was the theme of Monday's Prime. But, practically how can we do that when life around us is so complicated and busy? Our focus has to be here on the day to day.

Think of it more as "while you are going". You can practice the eternal by:
1. Setting your mind on things above (Col. 3:1-4)
2. Become daily in experience what we are in our position in Christ (Rom 6)
3. Take a journey to the eternal through the portal of the Word (John 1:1-5, 14-18)

What about this?
1. Find joy in everything, give thanks as you go.
2. Love life, live it to the full for a purpose greater than your own (the kingdom)
3. Pray as you are going in your spirit, stay connected to your Father in Heaven.
4. Ask God to help you continually make wise decisions and to avoid evil

These are just a few practical ways to practice the eternal. Remember, you are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes (James 4:14b), BUT you are SO valued by God. Make your life count. Be a light. Invite someone to Prime with you this week that you would not normally invite. You never know what God may do in their life. It could make an eternal difference and it will give you a whole new perspective!

The Secret life.
It can be a really bad thing , it can also be a really good thing.
That was the topic of this week's message.
We learned that there are bad, isolating secrets and there are secrets that lead to reward.
Jesus told us to let these 3 things be a secret and not for the whole world to see:
(Matthew 6:1-18)
1. Your giving
2. Your praying
3. Your fasting
I challenged everyone to pick one of the three in this week and to pursue it with great passion. As it is done in secret, where only your Heavenly Father can see, it will be rewarded. And, His reward system is greater than this world's. There is not even a comparison.

Remember the Mark Twain quote, "Everyone is like a moon, each has a dark side that they don't want to be seen." We talked about how God sees all and how we will all account for what we have said and done while here on this earth. God is full of grace and forgiveness, but will still require an account of us, just like the Tiger Woods press conference- accounting for his mistakes. That could have been each of us. The difference is that we will be accounting and accumulating or forfeiting rewards for crowns to lay at the feet of Jesus, the one who made possible the way for us to recieve a full pardon from our sin. (1 Corinthians 9:25/ 2 Timothy 4:7-8) Unbelievers will be accounting for their decision to reject Jesus which will result in judgement and eternal separation from a holy and loving God. (Matthew 12:36-37/ Romans 14:10-12/Matthew 25:31-46) You ask yourself, how can a Holy and Loving God let people go to hell? Practical ways to "guard your heart": Proverbs 4:13-17

1. Use wisdom in what you watch- don't just go the way of the crowd if the spirit of God is telling you you should not watch something...it's not playing the spoiler, it's protecting your eyes, the gateway to your soul.

2. Use wisdom in what you listen too- words do affect our minds and send us to places in our minds that are not pleasing to God if we are not careful. "But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed" (James 1:14) If what you are listening too or watching begins to lead you down the road of enticement, get off the road quickly.

3. Call out to God with your requests and do it with thanksgiving. (Phil. 4:4-7) He will guard your heart as you call out to him.

4. Don't "overshare" in a new relationship. Reserve that for a close circle friend.

5. Submit to God (strengths & weaknesses) BEFORE you get into a difficult situation so that you KNOW what your response will be before you get there. And, don't walk into danger willingly. Avoid it. Unless you are purposefully sharing the gospel and have all kinds of "Green Lights" from the Lord. Even then, include others for accountability.

6. Don't put your trust in man, put your trust in God. Matthew 6:33
At the same time, don't grow bitter towards people and pretend like it's just "you and Jesus". You need people and people need you. Together, we are the church, the Body of Christ.

Well, those are just some practical steps to guarding your heart. Obviously, there are many more that could make the list. Looking forward to Monday night and talking about "secret sins". I know, these are not easy subjects to listen too, but I would rather root out the problem and deal with it than sit around and laugh and deny that anything is wrong. The truth is too important to freedom.

The struggle within-

"Temptation is not sin, but yielding to tempation is sin."

"God tests us to confirm our faith, the devil tempts us to make us fall".

Great reminders. There is a "bottom line" when it comes to temptation. The Bible promises an out every time (1 Corinthians 10:13). And, we can take heart to know that Jesus Christ was tempted in every way we have been, yet was without sin (Hebrews 4:15-16). Listen now to what the Bible says we can do, pretty awesome: "Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of GRACE, that we may obtain MERCY and find grace to HELP in time of NEED" (obvisouly, my emphasis added to Hebrews 4:16).

There is a place you can go when tempted. That place offers help. The throne is not just some distant place that houses those who don't know what we are going through. The throne houses the One who walked where we walked, was confronted with the temptations and trials of this life, and is residence to the only One to ever pass through without sin. This is the same Jesus that says he prays for us. Wow.

There is so much opportunity to escape temptation. There is ample room for mercy and grace when you need the help. The throne room calls out to you to deny the lures of temptation and embrace the One who can help you "stand up under it". Today, this week....you can be an overcomer. Don't try it in your own strength. Lean on His. He resides in the Heavenlies and His mercies are new every single day.

So much to be learned about the "best way" to do relationships. It's interesting how everything that began as good has somehow been twisted to be bad. Sex, outside of marriage is sometimes exalted- but produces guilt, shame, jealousy, low trust....just to name a few. But, sex inside of marriage, as the Bible states in Hebrews 13 is honorable. Marriage is honorable among all. Living together is not. And, as we talked about last night- we are not representing those who want to yell at people from the Bible. We want to reveal the true results of living together outside of a lifetime commitment, or marriage. We saw that fear was a big motivator for people to move in together. Their parents couldn't hold it together, so the next generation decides to "test drive" for compatibility before they make the purchase. But, ladies....let me again reiterate- what guy would NOT want to have everything from you without a commitment? Where is the mystery? We live in a society where women reveal too much (and so do guys- "pants on the ground") There is such a draw for guys to mystery, and there just seems to be so little of it in relationships. I'm not talking about being weird or creepy. I'm talking about dressing modestly to leave something to the imagination. And, Kelly mentioned something powerful last night- most women would rather recieve the love of one man than the attention of many. If that's the case, and I believe it is....as believers, we need to hold our standards high even in a long relationship. You can't do it alone. You need constant encouragement. Just don't go through your life missing the opportunity to be full of joy, live with complete trust and enjoy each and every day without looking over your shoulder or living under the cloud of consequence. Need forgiveness? He's got plenty to hand out. Trust God with your singleness. Let Him lead in your relationships (and maybe future marriage). Ask him to help you become a whole person. And, then be satisfied in Him.....

Relationships- Why are they so stinkin' hard sometimes? Ever think of what makes a guy tick and what makes a girl tick? They are somewhere on the polar opposite sides of the universe. Then, how can that possibly work together or for the good? That just doesn't make sense, right? Wrong.

God designed us for relationship.
Many run from it.
Others run over it.
Still some seem to have a seemless time finding "the one". (Why not me, right?)

"Is there a formula to follow? Or am I doing something wrong? Hello up there? Can you hear me?"

Steve and Kelly will lead this night coming from two very different stages in life. Steve, married at 28 (almost 11 years) with a 2 1/2 yr. old and one on the way, and Kelly, single- having spent 10 years of her life on the mission field, she represents joy and purpose to everyone who knows her and looks in on her life. Married or single, God never changes. We must.

Snake bitten, crazy cannibals, thick jungle, foreign world- some of these describe places and things from mission fields of the past and present. I think sometimes, if you are like me, you think that you may not quite be up for that kind of mission. And, when you hear about people giving their lives for the gospel in an uncharted land (ex-John Paton & the Hebrides) among cannibals, it can be a little intimidating, humiliating and all but take the air out of your spiritual sail. I can't do that. I don't know that I care for a people group that much. How do I get from here to there and is there the ultimate goal?

Last night, we looked at Luke 24:36-48 after Jesus had resurrected from the dead, walked among the disciples along the road to Emmaeus and showed up in the middle of a room where the disciples were meeting in Jerusalem. He basically said this (my paraphrase). "I'm not a ghost, come and see and feel. And, give me something to eat". Then, he tells them what their job is and where it is to start.....Jerusalem. Right where they were. Home. We know that the goal is to get the gospel to the whole world, but there has to be a starting point. That starting point is here, home...Jerusalem for us.

That's why we decided to plant a church on the campus of KSU in the Fall of 2010. As many of you heard at our last Prime, meetings have been happening on campus since the Fall of 2009. And, it is our desire to take the gospel to that campus since we have long realized that the campus is not coming to us. 20+ of you responded to the call to help. Many more will follow. We believe that it is our job to move the Kingdom forward without regard to who gets the credit. I hope that wherever you are, you'll get involved in Kingdom work. Join the Campus Church team, join your local church, and certainly feel free to join the movement at Prime.

"Expose the injustice"- Ghandi
We watched in this last Prime how injustice has been exposed in different ways in the past- The Humane Society's commercials, the re-education and rehabilitation of the Ecuadorian Condor, and the brave story of Mamie Till in the death of her son, Emmit. These are just a few of the instances where the greater public was allowed to look in on the injustice of a situation. And because of the public outcry, transformation has been and is happening. Why can't we apply that same standard to the value of life? We watched how a 9 week old baby, just formed, has incredible reflexes that early in developement! My wife, Renee is now 10 weeks pregnant, so that moment was pretty meaningful to me. We introduced the ministry of Justice For All last night. They are applying the same principles as Ghandi did, as the Humane Society did, as Mamie Till did, and even the Ecuadorian Condor program did. JFA wants to educate the next generation and at least ask the hard questions, but do it in a tone that is honoring to God, I believe. They operate shoulder to shoulder, discussing the issues, relaying truth- not face to face to try and win an argument. You see, way too many people have been stung by the heartache of abortion. Many have thought that it was their only way out. God's grace is big enough for the most difficult situation and His forgiveness will always extend beyond comprehension. It was such a relief to be back at Prime this Monday night. It really is my favorite day of the week. I missed seeing all of my buddies and buddettes for those few weeks over the holidays. It was a big honor to have Carrie McDonnall join us to share her story of how God uses the ordinary in extraordinary ways. Her story is a little overwhelming to me. Even as I wrote out some of the questions for the interview, I just kept feeling uneasy because I wanted to make sure that we honored her, her late husband, and those 3 workers that died that day in Mosul, Iraq in 2004. I just kept thinking..."don't let this be a program or just a service, let it be about the people and their stories". I don't know if you've ever felt the pressure to try and manipulate something (for a good cause), but I constantly have something inside of me that serves as a "governor" on my motives. And, I'm glad. It's called the Holy Spirit, I know. I desparately want to have pure motives. That is one of my life's goals as a believer in Christ. But, sometimes good things and expected outcomes can bring dark shadows over pure motives. I say all that to say, it was a great night. I felt like Carrie's message to us fit perfectly with our series "World Changers" in that one person really can make a difference, and you don't have to be a superhero....matter of fact, as you recall- Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 1:26-29 that God chose the foolish things, the weak things, the lowly things of this world to shame the wise, shame the strong and prove that outside of Christ, there is no boasting. Remember Matthew 5:13-16? WE are salt. WE are light. Salt permeates a substance and loses its identity, so should we. Light works silently, pointing people to the Light of the World, Jesus. So, should we. Finally, we are not called to be God's glorious chandeliers, drawing attention to ourselves. Rather, we are like a single unadorned light bulb along a dark corridor showing the way to the throne room of Jesus. 1. Raised $4,500 to dig a clean water well in Africa

2. Helped Church on the Street in Downtown Atlanta feed/minister to around 250 homeless

3. Raised over $500 to help provide for the Single Parent Christmas

4. Helped a single mom get her house ready for sale and went over and above just before Christmas!

Merry Christmas/ Prime '09/ Prime '10

For a moment, I thought I was transferred in some magical way to middle school as Rick Young came out and took our gift auction to a new level! Let's just go ahead and say it, he is the king of game, the host w/ the most. We love Rick and are grateful for his "guest appearance" last night. We raised just under $500 for our Single Moms. To me, it was a culmination of all the things that we want to stand for at Prime, not meeting just to meet, but meeting with a purpose. AND, we all came together and practiced what we believe- giving makes a difference. Like our pastor says all the time, "You can't out-give God" and "You are never more like Jesus than when you are giving". It's true. As I look back, I think about a group that raised $4,500 to dig a well in Africa for 30,000 people that we've never met. Then, I see the outreach projects, the mission trips represented, the money raised for different projects. God is using this ministry to make a dent not only here in our community, but in places around the world that we may never get to set foot on. May God bless our group and expand our territory next year. May 2010 be the most giving year for Prime by far! We want to live like we are leaving. Merry Christmas everyone...

Prime Baptisms- Dec. 7th

It was really a humbling night last Monday night to observe the Lord's Supper and all that it entails. Reflection, remembrance, gratitude. These are traits that we should carry with us throughout the rest of our lives. We mess up, we stumble, we fall....and yet God is always there to pick us back up and show us grace. Anybody can take things for granted, but we want to be those who are grateful, who remember, and as we look back we begin to see how big of a sacrifice the cross really was...and it was for us.

This coming Monday we'll get to see some of our people get baptized who have become followers of Christ in the recent days. It's going to be a very special night. Won't you come celebrate with us and bring somebody with you? You never know what kind of an influence you could have in someone's eternal destiny! "A generous man will prosper: he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed." Proverbs 11:25

The Lord's Supper...

It was great to talk about the "why" of baptism this past Prime. I think it's important that we take the last statements of Jesus to "baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, & the Holy Spirit". We are identifying with him after we have become his followers. If you didn't get a chance to listen, check out the podcast symbol to the right. It's the message entitled, "Marks of a Believer, Part I". Part II is this coming Monday, November 30th and we'll look at the second aspect which is "Making Disciples". Wow, this series has seemed to go to some deep places...places that are not really all that comfortable. When you start talking about "When God Doesn't Make Sense", you start talking about things that stir your emotions, some good, some bad.

Meet Olaf Schmid, a bomb defuser with the British Army. He defused 64 road side bombs in Afghanistan during his time there and saved countless lives. He was a legend in a lot of people's eyes. He was defusing one more bomb on his last day before he went home. He never made it home. That was November 3rd, this year. Are we supposed to make sense of that? This is a recent shot from the Hubble Telescope rightly called "The Eye of God". I'm constantly reminded and humbled by the fact that the God of all Creation has mercy on me. He looks at me with love. He proved that love on the cross. He looks at you that way. What about when we blow it in this journey? What do we do? How uncomfortable is that waiting period? I know. Waiting. It's sometimes like this picture. There seems to be 4 different paths to take: which one do I take? how do I know what's best? does anyone care if I pick the wrong one? Should I care?

It can be so uncomfortable to live for Jesus when everything else in your life is screaming to go the opposite way. The only way to really decifer where you are going is to have the correct compass. Opinions, good books, others' experiences will all let you down. I bet you know the answer. There is only one true option that works every time.

The Second Part of the "Hello, my name is..." series on WAITING will undoubtedly encourage you. And, we have a little surprise. Bring someone with you this Monday night. WE DID IT!!!!

Dry Tears Update- GOAL MET!!

Well, God has done it! We have raised over $4,500 dollars, so we've met our goal! As of Monday night, God provided the funds we needed to drill a well in Sono, Burkina Faso! The people of Sono will now have acess to a clean water well, and ultimately, this will result in thousands of lives saved, and the name of Jesus will be magnified through this project as well.

Its been amazing to see how God has provided in miraculous ways. It took us six weeks to meet this goal, and at times I wondered if that was even possible. I have such little faith sometimes. But, we have to give God ALL the glory in this, because He loves Sono more than we ever could, and He wanted this well for them even more than we did. I'm reminded of several verses that talk about God's desire for His children to help the poor. "He who is gracious to the poor man lends to the Lord, And He will repay him for his good deed." (Proverbs 19:17) And, 'Then He will answer them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’' (Matthew 25:45). Its amazing to know that God has allowed us to take part in helping some of the world's poorest. And we acted in obedience to a request from our Savior to serve and love his children halfway around the world. I'm SO excited!

We'll be sure to keep everyone updated with pictures and progress reports as we continue to stay connected to Dry Tears and Sono!

Peace with God

“ Their bloodguilt, which I have not pardoned, I will pardon." For the LORD dwells in Zion!”
Joel 3:21

John Bunyan, well known author of Pilgrim’s Progress, was deeply tormented in his soul. He desperately longed for peace with God. One day he crossed paths with a small group of impoverished women discussing spiritual matters. He became deeply convicted by their strong love for God and devotion to Him… yet he doubted. Whenever he considered the sins of his youth, he could not comprehend that a holy God could forgive him for what he had done. Until one day when God sent His answer through His Word.

Bunyan read Joel 3:21, and the truth of God’s cleansing forgiveness expressed in that verse struck a chord. God had forgiven him. A fresh sense of God’s presence in his life was proof that God’s Word was setting him free!

Consider the difficulties and trails God has allowed into your life. Could they be one way He is calling you to return to Him? Ponder the condition of your own heart in the light of God’s call for genuine repentance. Has sin quenched the Spirit’s presence in you, or are you enjoying peace with God?

Acoustic PRIME was awesome this
past Monday night. The band opened with an old rendition of a Beatles' classic tune, "Blackbird". Will Goodwin and Lauren Boyd led an incredible worship time, and Dave shared a poignant message from the book of Revelation.

We also heard from one of our team leaders and the challenges of clean water and disease that she experienced growing up in Africa. That led us to our Dry Tears emphasis and our "Fill our Cup to fill theirs" campaign. We are raising $4,500 to dig a well and provide clean water to 30,000 people in a very specific region of Africa. And, we are off to a great start. We hope you'll be able to jump on board with us in the days to come. Emily Walters is leading the way for our team in this effort. We are grateful for her heart and the opportunity that God has given us to be such a blessing to those on the other side of the world, the sometimes forgotten. Not to us.

Looking back, looking ahead...

Next Monday, March 23rd is going to be a very special night with an out of the ordinary setup.

This past Monday, we saw the effects (& stats) of those that are affected by dirty water. One of the first projects that we've taken up as a group who want to make a difference is to dig a well in an African village where 30,000 people will be the beneficiaries. It's amazing to see how God can use a group from Atlanta to impact the lives of so many so far away. We'll be hearing a real account next week of just how difficult it can be. And, we'll have a visible reminder of how we can make more of a difference together than we can apart.

Dave reminded us all last night that our God is a creative, amazing God. Join us in the next few weeks to see how He uses people in His creative process. We're grateful for all the support we've seen at PRIME, now we want to get the word out and make the biggest possible contribution to God's Kingdom and to hurting people that we can possibly make. Please consider this week who you can invite to next week's PRIME and let's go make a difference in our community and our world.

What happens to those who have never heard about Jesus?

Question: "What happens to those who have never heard about Jesus?"Answer: All people are accountable to God whether they have “heard about Him” or not. The Bible tells us that God has clearly revealed Himself in nature (Romans 1:20) and in the hearts of people (Ecclesiastes 3:11). The problem is that the human race is sinful; we all reject this knowledge of God and rebel against Him (Romans 1:21-23). Apart from God's grace, God would give us over to the sinful desires of our hearts, allowing us to discover how useless and miserable life is apart from Him. This He does for those who reject Him (Romans 1:24-32).In reality, it is not that some people have not heard about God. Rather, the problem is that they have rejected what they have heard and what is readily seen in nature. Deuteronomy 4:29 proclaims, “But if from there you seek the LORD your God, you will find him if you look for him with all your heart and with all your soul.” This verse teaches an important principle—everyone who truly seeks after God will find Him. If a person truly desires to know God, God will make Himself known.The problem is, “there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God” (Romans 3:11). People reject the knowledge of God that is present in nature and in their own hearts, and instead decide to worship a “god” of their own creation. It is foolish to debate the fairness of God sending someone to hell who never had the opportunity to hear the Gospel of Christ. People are responsible to God for what God has already revealed to them. The Bible says that people reject this knowledge, and therefore God is just in condemning them to hell.Instead of debating the fate of those who have never heard, we, as Christians, should be doing our best to make sure that they hear. We are called to spread the Gospel throughout the nations (Matthew 28:19-20; Acts 1:8). The fact that we know people reject the knowledge of God revealed in nature must motivate us to proclaim the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ. Only through accepting the God’s grace through the Lord Jesus Christ can people be saved from their sins and rescued from an eternity apart from God in hell.If we assume that those who never hear the Gospel are granted mercy from God, we will run into a terrible problem. If people who never hear the Gospel are saved, it is logical that we should make sure no one ever hears the Gospel. The worst thing we could do would be share the Gospel with a person and have him or her reject it. If that were to happen, he or she would be condemned. People who do not hear the Gospel must be condemned, or else there is no motive for evangelism. Why run the risk of people possibly rejecting the Gospel and condemning themselves when they were previously saved because they had never heard the Gospel?

Last night was a great gathering. Seth Condrey and Chris Coleman and the PRIME band combined to lead worship. It was very engaging, very real. And, Dave continued his series "Field Tested". He left us with some very thought provoking statements, such as: "For those that have more knowlege of the Lord, you are responsible to help those who have less". And, then he told a story of a smurf, a party, & a very odd opportunity to share his faith. Had to be there to get that one.

We continue to hear about lives that are being transformed as a result of the ministry of PRIME. Our hope is that God will multiply that transformation ten-fold in the months to come.

By the way, coming up in a couple of weeks, we are having our always popular "Question & Answer" night, live. We'll let you text in questions and Dave will take them in real time. Last time, we were able to get 17 questions answered in an hour. It's fun. Hope you can join us.

Questions

As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts higher than your thoughts." ISAIAH 55:9

My 7 year old niece loves clothes and is quite choosy about the color and texture of most everything she puts on. One day last week she decided she was ready to go fashion “solo” for school. Sure enough, she was dressed and ready (even on time!) for two days straight. On the third day, she came to my sister and said “Mom, you need to put my clothes out for me again. I’m just too little for this much pressure.”

Out of the mouths of babes.

The more I study, the more I discover how much I do not know. I pray often that God would give me a teachable heart and a greater capacity to learn His ways. But I accept the fact that I will never know it all. There are clear limitations to what we have the capacity and intelligence to understand.

The Bible is the source for everything we need to know for this life (2 Pet 1:3), including how to know Him and receive eternal life through faith in His Son. But if the Bible doesn’t seem to have an answer to a question… be careful not to doubt the answers it has given you. There is so much about this universe and the God who made it that we simply do not know. The bottom line is on this side of life we will never fully understand God, or all of His ways. His purposes and what He has chosen to reveal to us of them, are moving forward according to His timetable.

As we continue to enjoy learning more about Him each week, let’s remember that He has chosen to reveal incredible truths to us. That gives us the awesome opportunity to study and learn from the treasure of His Word. It also gives us the opportunity to learn to trust Him with the things we do not understand.

When God interrupts…

WORSHIP The act of paying honor to a deity; religious reverence and homage.

Last night at Prime, we enjoyed an interruption by God. As we asked Him to do, He led us. And following the leadership of attentive servants, we ended up spending our entire night singing praises and worshipping our Lord.

“From there he went on toward the hills east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. There he built an altar to the LORD and called on the name of the LORD.” Gen 12:8

Worship is giving God the best that He has given you. Be careful with what you do with the best you have. Whenever you get a blessing from God, give it back to Him as a love gift. Take time to meditate before God and offer the blessing back to Him in a deliberate act of worship. If you hoard a thing for yourself, it will turn into spiritual dry rot, as the manna did when it was hoarded. God will never let you hold a spiritual thing for yourself, it has to be given back to Him that He may make it a blessing to others.

Bethel is the symbol of communion with God; Ai is the symbol of the world. Abraham pitched his tent between the two. The measure of worth of our public activity for God is the private profound communion we have with Him. Rush is wrong every time, there is always plenty of time to worship God. Quiet days with God may be a snare. We have to pitch our tents where we will always have quiet times with God, however noisy our times with the world may be. There are not three stages in spiritual life – worship, waiting and work. Some of us go in jumps like spiritual frogs, we jump from worship to waiting, and from waiting to work. God’s idea is that the three should go together. They were always together in the life of our Lord. He was unhasting and unresting. It is a discipline, we cannot get into it all at once.

What a great kickoff to the new year! And, what a great turnout last night.
We are expecting great things in 2009. Chris Coleman and the PRIME band did a great job last night and we are looking forward to having Seth Condrey with us this week (yes...I made a boo-boo when announcing that he would be here this past week, sorry Charlie).

We spent a couple of hours on Tuesday at Kennesaw State University with our friends from the Baptist Collegiat Ministries, handing out 25 boxes of free pizza and invites for PRIME. We want everyone in Atlanta to know that we are there every Monday!

Make sure to join us next Monday for the continuation of Dave's series, "Field Tested". And, bring a friend to our Visitor's Reception with Dave/Band/PRIME leaders after it's over. We'd be honored to get to meet our first time guests.

Mermaids

Christmas Eve I pulled my 3 year old nephew close and asked “If you could be either a cowboy or an Indian, which would you be?” Unbeknownst to him, I was getting him ready for the tan cowboy chaps that were hidden beneath the pretty paper in the box he’d been dying to open all day.

His eyes lit up and he leaned into my face and whispered… “A mermaid.”

You can imagine my surprise.

The air is full (aside from the falling rain) of the crisp hope of a new year, a new start. Enjoy this new year… think outside the box. This journey we’re all on called life is full of joys and sorrows and I truly believe they all add up to help us know and understand our purpose and the One who designed us for this journey.

Enjoy your new start, enjoy being who your Creator made you to be, and most of all enjoy pursuing Truth.

What a great way to bring 2008 to a close, hope you enjoyed our last Prime of the year last night. What a blast! We had three winners in our "Tacky Christmas Sweater Contest", and enjoyed closing out the year with Dave Edwards and our musical guests Seth Condrey and Chris Coleman.

Lights

Ok, so I got home with a little light left in the day (a pretty rare occasion), and got overly ambitious. I grabbed the Christmas lights and step ladder and darted outside. My house is comfortably situated on a hill. Let me clarify, I have friends that have refused to park in the drive for fear their brakes would give in to the grade… so suffice it to say it’s pretty steep.

My project began well using clips and a nifty pole to attach lights to the gutter, which appeared rather simple in the instruction pictures. About 6 minutes into my fun little Christmas project I had almost given up… the pole wouldn’t lock and kept collapsing each time I would almost reach the edge of the gutter and the clips were flimsy and popped off breaking into pieces. In my impatience I threw the not so helpful pole aside, climbed up on the handrail, leaned out over the edge and put the clips on with my bare hands. I have a few splinters to prove it.

About the time I neared the corner, holding on with one arm and reaching well beyond where I should have been (feeling pretty good about my progress I might add) I glanced down. Suddenly I realized I was leaning out over what would be a 12 foot fall onto hard concrete and at that moment my feet didn’t feel so sturdy.

Now I didn’t fall… as an experienced klutz this would not have been unfamiliar territory. But as I finished those last few clips the words of one of my favorite Psalms came into my mind. I have to admit the only verse I could recall (over and over for those final few reaches) was “He will not allow your foot to slip”.

Before I went to sleep that night I read through the rest of Ps 121, and was reminded once again what a privilege it is to worship a God who watches over my steps (even when they might be careless), does not grow tired or need sleep, protects me from evil and (this is so powerful) keeps my soul.

The more I learn of Him, the more I trust Him.

It's never quite left me...."Charlie....Charlie...Chaarrrrrlllliiieeee". It gives me nightmares. At the same time, I have that same type of dry humor. It's a love/hate relationship.
How is it that this video still plays in my mind? It's triggered at different times...someone says something or I meet someone named "Charlie". Wow, these things are powerful and often times very annoying.
There are plenty of things that annoy me. On the top of my list would be taking my dog out to "go potty" (you learn these sayings when you have a little girl in the house). I am on the dog's time schedule, not mine. That doesn't sit well with me, especially when it's 4 degrees, raining, and he's out smelling the roses and enjoying the scenery. I tend to say things that I have to apologize for later (just seeing if you are awake...I don't apologize to my dog). But, I do think of what it would be like for someone to put that kind of pressure on me in that vulnerable time...but I digress.
That's just one annoying thing that really gets my goat. There are others of course.
Thank God for his patience. It gives me a standard to shoot for. I recall a time when two blind men were begging on the side of the street (Matt.20:29-34) as the multitudes came walking by, and Jesus. When these guys heard Jesus was passing by, they became annoying (from our point of view). They began to "cry out" saying "Have mercy on us, O Lord, son of David!"
When they cried out like that, the multitude (disciples included I'm sure) told them to be quiet! You know what they did? They got more annoying. The Bible says "they cried out all the more". Here's the difference. We see annoying, just like the crowd. Jesus stood still and called to them. He asked them the question, "What do you want me to do for you?" They responded that "their eyes would be opened".
Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. And immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him.
Next time someone gets on your nerves, remember the compassion of Jesus.
And, next time you have a need in your life, maybe you need to become a little more "annoying".

Secrets

I remember those early days on the playground when a juicy secret was usually offered only with a double cross of the heart and a promise to stick a needle in an eye if not kept. Growing up with two siblings, I had plenty of chances to keep (and even more often leak) little secrets. There was always such an excitement that came from the keeping to the telling.

When someone confides in me today I don’t usually have to cross and pledge, but it’s really not that different. Years later I think I can honestly say I’ve learned the value of keeping confidences without the need for crosses or needles. I have also learned that when someone confides in me, it deepens the bond between us. It conveys the message that this person considers me trustworthy and that he / she is willing to place in my possession something that is of great value to him. More often than not, I am far more touched by the gesture than I am by the secret itself. To be told a secret is about being chosen, set apart because a secret by its very nature is something that is not known to everyone.

Being entrusted with a secret by someone is an awesome privilege; being entrusted with a secret by God Himself is the ultimate.

In John 2:1-11 we get a glimpse of Jesus at the wedding of a friend and are privy to His very first miracle. The wine runs out early, and at the request of His mother Jesus instructs the servants to fill six stone jars with water then to serve some to the master of the reception. What must have gone through their minds? They knew what they had put into those jars. As we read on, we learn that the master of the reception not only drank water that had been turned into wine, but was shocked that the bridegroom had saved his best for the end of the party. But did you see it?

“He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.”

In the midst of the live music, honored guests, fancy clothes, a bride, bridegroom, and master, the lowly servants were the ones who held the sacred knowledge of where this wine had come from!

The servants’ job that day in Cana was more than likely what they did everyday. They held one of the most humble and lowly positions in life, but in the end they enjoyed something more precious than anyone else in the room; the intimate confidence of the Savior. They listened to the voice of Jesus and quietly filled His request, and in the midst of their faithful service received a revelation they could have never imagined.

I am challenged by their faithful service, and eager response to the voice of Christ. Out of all those that were in that place, God chose to reveal Himself through a miracle to those who were simply obeying in the “dailyness” of life.

Thirsty?...

If you live anywhere in the Atlanta area, you too have enjoyed the unexpected gas shortages of recent days. Many of us have pulled into a station only to find it empty, or at painfully high prices when we finally hit the jackpot.
Today I waited for 20 minutes in line at a local station with about 939 other nearly empty (and impatient) drivers. Although I’m better at it than I used to be, patience has never been a particular strength. But today was a rare exception, I was sincerely grateful to have found a source of gas after much searching. After witnessing some near brawls, I left happily (and poorer) with my tank full.
“ but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." John 4:14
Jesus explains to a Samaritan woman at a well that He could offer her a drink of a different kind - a water that wouldn’t run dry, or fail to quench thirst. I’ve thought about this verse many times, and wondered “Lord, I get spiritually thirsty a lot, and I know people that get tired, weary and thirsty too”. Whether it’s a gas shortage, broken relationship or circumstances beyond our control one thing is clear… life is hard. What did He mean that if we drink the water He offers we would never thirst again?
I’m no scholar, but I think that the key is realizing the source. I’ve found Christ to be the only real source of forgiveness and relief for my soul, and unlike gas these days, His offer never runs out. If we’ve never met Him there, that is our first invitation. If we’ve already met Him and experienced forgiveness, the point is not that we’ll never become spiritually “thirsty” again. I think the point is that when we do get “thirsty”, we now know where to go to get our thirst quenched.
Just like I’ll have to return for gas when I’m running low, spiritually I need to return to Him as my source to nourish my soul on a regular basis. And the good news?... That kind of source never runs dry.

Warmth

I don't know about you, but I hate to be cold. It always makes me a little sad to see Fall fade into Winter, leaving the warm days of Summer behind. I enjoy wearing jackets and sweaters for about two minutes, then I'm ready for Summer again - sunshine, tanning lotion, picnics and outdoors.
These past few mornings have helped me remember my appreciation for warm and cozy (how in the world I shivered through 9 winters in Hungary I do not know).
You know what else my warms my soul?
Snuggling with my nieces and nephew (when they slow down long enough), reading a good book by the fireplace, laughing so hard it hurts, learning something new, strong hugs on hard days, bonfires out at Brooke's place with smores and good conversation (really warm!), and...
each Monday night when we gather together and ask God to draw us a little closer through Prime. Our incredible volunteers who pour love, prayers and time into each other and those who come each week - what an honor it is to serve alongside you! I am warmed by the energy, love and truth of Mondays.

Break the Silence

Have you ever heard the phrase, "the silence was deafening"? What in the world does that mean? I think about the person who has no hope, sitting in their room...no where to turn, no one to turn too. That's a shame. I've been there. I remember how loud the silence was....when I first set out in college to live all out for Jesus. All of my friends all did the same things. I wanted a change. I ended up in a place of isolation after making that decision. Welcome to the desert (not the jungle).
I wouldn't change a thing. I know what it's like to hear the deafening silence. I know what it's like to not have anything to do or anyone to hang out with on Friday and Saturday night. But, I also know what it's like to see God work in ways that were unexpected and over the top. He turned those things around for me. He gave me more friends than I could have ever imagined.....all because I trusted Him in a very difficult, and dark season of my life.
You know, Jesus calls us to follow recklessly after Him. He didn't say it would be easy. Matter of fact, it's going to be very hard. I see the benefits now of choosing to follow Him despite what my circumstances looked like. Those circumstances turned around. It just took some time and a true commitment on my part, the testing in the desert.
This is one of my favorite quotes, "the people who need our help the most are the very ones who cannot ask for it". This Monday night and all the ones to follow, there will be people sitting in the silence all over Atlanta....and it will be deafening. Prime is more than a meeting. We want to break the silence in people's lives. We want to get on the journey with Jesus and recklessly throw ourselves at His feet and watch Him do "greater things" in and through us.
Keep your eyes open this week. Your invitation, your kindness can break the silence in someone's life.
